I'm not sure if you will be able to get a state job.  You will have to check with the HR Department and see.  It might also depend on what type of offense it is.  What types of skills do you have?  What types of work have you done before that you might be able to go back into?  I would HIGHLY recommend getting some type of support system asap.  Start with your church and let them know where you are at.  If you don't have one - get one.  If you don't like the ones you've experienced, get a new one and forget the past!  Make friends because that is what it is all about.  It's who you know and who you influence from now on.  Don't be discouraged if you cannot get the golden goose just yet..  I'm talking about the state job.  There should be plenty of jobs that won't matter if you have a record.  Some don't even check or ask you.  On the other hand, some do ask but don't care as long as you promise to do a good job, show up for work on time every day and don't make any excuses.  Felons can sometimes be the best workers to hire because they are so determined to prove themselves and a lot of employers know that.  I wish you the very best and I hope you will stay in touch and let us know how it's going.  Get your support system in place.  You need people who are pulling for you.  I'm pulling for you and I know you will go very far in life if you keep trying and don't let discouragement keep you from pushing forward.

I have been struggling to survive ever since I got out 3/6/07.  I am on probation and living with my mom and I was going to truck driving school to get my CDL license until they changed things on me. I signed for a $4800 loan and borrowed $200 for the deposit from my mom to take this four-week trucking course.  Within two weeks I got my CDL Permit License (which is good) but then they  asked me for another $400 upfront!  I am not working I told them. The school kicked me out until I get another $400 and I've been out since May 14th and here it is May 25th!  My mom isn't able to help me and I've been looking for a job but who is going to hire me with a frearm conviction?  I couldn't even get a job at Taco Bell!  This is extremely frustrating for me and my poor mom because she has done everything humanly possible at this point... as it is right now I am living with her and she is carrying all of the load.  Will someone give me a break?

Hey garyb,

I'm so sorry to hear that you don't have enough $$$ to finish the cl%%%%.  If I had the extra $$  I'd send it to you right now.  My goal is to someday be able to help more felons with their job situation so they can get on their feet better.  But first I myself need to get in a position to do that.   I was wondering if you have a car?  I recently found out that you can make some pretty fat cash real fast delivering pizzas.  It might be another option for you just in the short term.  I really want you to finish truck driving school and get that CDL!  Go for it.  If anyone here can help garyb, please do.  He's doing what he can to better his life and get a good job.  Stay in touch and please let us know how it's going.

After working in the HR field I really sympathize with anyone who has a felony on their record. Many times I would interview somone who seemed great but then they couldn't make it past the background check. If it were up to me I would have hired many of those people!!! Companies don't even take into account what the felony was  sometimes...they just shoot you down. I would like to start some kind advocacy or something to give people a 2nd chance. What kind of world do we live in where you make a mistake and get cast out of the workforce!!!

HRchick..  I'm glad you posted.  You are so right about some of those people that you could have hired.  I would also like to start some kind of advocacy ot help give people a second chance.  I can't believe a felony causes so many problems when trying to get a job!!  A job is your livelihood and if you can't get a decent one then what is a felon to do but be encouraged to be a system hater and go back to his old ways.  I do know of some re-entry programs for people just getting out of prison or work release.  They are usually run by churches or treatment programs.  I would like to see something much better happening on a much bigger level.  Maybe this forum will help create awareness.

Hang in there yo. I too was released from prison but i was released in 2006 . two felony counts.  my life has been a wreck ever since i caught my case in 2001 . I was on probation for 3 yrs out of the 7 yrs i recieved. i only did 3 of em on probation but i kept gettin revoked every single yr . I did six months in 02 and got out and in 03 i got revoked again! i did 6 more months. then i got reinstated. my po really didnt like me at all and i never did anything to her. but F**k it. I told her to get it over with and lock me up so they could stop puttin me through all this drama . So in jan of 2004 i got mobbed by a team of police at my apt and they locked me down. I got a 2 yr sentence and they denied me parole so i did all my time in prison in beeville and about 5 months of it in huntsville texas. i live in a border city and i am hustling here and there to make my money . Im gonna start traveling soon and lookin for work in alaska and other places. I know its hard but keep ya head up !
